Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

8-WEEK COURSE | CEUs AVAILABLE

The renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR) is a hands-on experiential learning program, intended to engage and connect the mind and the body relationship for better health. You will discover you have more resources to tap into for better physical and mental health than you might have realized!

This 8 week evidence-based course, originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn Ph.D over 40 years ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is designed to help participants discover and utilize their own inner resources for bringing balance, health and peace of mind to an ever-changing 24/7 world. No previous experience is required or needed! An orientation session will be held prior to the start of the class.

Mindfulness training is intended for individuals who are generally healthy, and who would like to learn to manage their stress more skillfully. MBSR is meant to complement, not replace, any treatments you might be receiving. This course is for those new to mindfulness awareness, as well as all those have studied before and wish to refresh your practice and continue a deeper dive into what you have previously learned.

Class Structure and Commitment:

  • Orientation class (1.5 hours - required for enrollment) - one week before class starts

  • Eight weekly classes, 2 ½ hrs each (31 hours of direct instruction)

  • One half-day retreat (on a Saturday)

  • Daily home practice assignments for 40-60 minutes each day

  • You must be willing to make a strong commitment to attend all classes and to practice daily home assignments for eight weeks

In order to receive a completion letter for the course, you may not miss more than two classes.

  • This introductory session will acquaint you with the practice of mindfulness as taught as originally developed and taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. This session will be approximately one hour and 30 minutes. At this time, you can decide if the MBSR course is right for you!

  • You will receive an overview of the course and learn the foundations of a mindfulness practice. We begin to talk about what it means to be fully engaged in the present moment and you will be introduced to mindful eating, mindful breathing, and the body-scan.

  • In this week's session and practices, we dive deeper into the body scan and how to use it to cultivate a greater sense of awareness and presence. We also discuss how to integrate mindfulness into our daily lives

  • In this session we introduce other mindfulness practices such as mindful yoga, sitting meditation, and walking meditation. We begin to attend to and investigate how your experiences create such reactions as pleasure or discomfort in the mind and body.

  • This week, you will learn about the stress reaction cycle and how you can bring greater awareness to moments of automatic habitual stress reactions. We also take a deeper dive into all the mindfulness practices we have covered to date.

  • The half-way point! This week, you will begin to pay attention to the moments in your life where you might be stuck in habitual styles of thinking that can keep you feeling stuck. We will bring awareness to moments of reacting and explore options for responding with greater mindfulness and spaciousness.

  • This week, the theme of this class is fundamentals of interpersonal mindfulness. You will learn about applying awareness at times when communication becomes difficult and gain direct experience of a variety of styles of communication for more effective and creative interpersonal skills.

  • The intensive nature of this six-hour session is intended to review, reinforce and strengthen the tools and practices you have learned in the course so far.

  • This week, you will explore the many ways you can integrate mindfulness more fully into your life. You'll learn how to maintain the discipline and flexibility of daily practice as circumstances change over the course of your life.

  • In the final week of the program, you will have a review of everything you've learned over the course, with particular emphasis on carrying the momentum forward.
